Date Rape in College
The statistics are that approximately 20% of college women experience rape or attempted rape while in college. These are staggering numbers. As you might guess for lots of reasons rape is the most under reported crime on campus. The University of Missouri at Rolla recently asked me to speak on campus on the topic of Preventing Sexual Assault. There are ways to reduce the probability of date rape occuring. The first is to limit your alcohol intake. Alcohol is involved in 75% of date rapes. Use the buddy system and agree with friends that when you go to parties you will look out for each other. There are many more tips in See Sally Kick Ass: A Woman's Guide to Personal Safety.

Assaults on School Teachers
I recently was a speaker at the Missouri Association of School Librarians annual convention on the topic of "Everyday Personal Safety". This is a timely topic for educators since the US Dept of Education surveyed 3.7 million teachers and found that on average 4% of public school teachers are physically assaulted and an additional 7% are threatened with violence each year! These statistics would indicate that every educator should have some basic self-defense/personal safety training. Unfortunately most schools do not provide that type of training for their teachers.
